Burkina Faso

Explore the real Africa! See Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa, surrounded by six other African countries: Mali to the North, Niger to the East, Benin to the South-East, Togo and Ghana to the South, and Côte d'Ivoire to the South-West.

Formerly known as the Republic of Upper Volta, Burkina Faso was renamed on August 4, 1984 by President Thomas Sankara to mean "The land of the noble people" in the native language of the country.

Being an impoverished country, thousands of farm workers migrate South every year to Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana in search of paid labour. This is Africa’s poorest country and also its most illiterate. The population is estimated at over 12 million.
